A Final Resting Place

A Final Resting Place

Dig down into the history, architecture and stories of Greyfriars Churchyard

A fascinating and varied ‘green space’ walk. Graveyards are known to enhance health and well being and Greyfriars is no exception. It is one of the oldest in Edinburgh and has an exceptional collection of monuments.

Main sights

On this walking tour you will learn about:

  • Greyfriars Bobby
  • The Body Snatchers
  • Burke and Hare
  • Jinglin’ Geordie
  • The Covenanters
  • The Flodden Wall
  • JK Rowling’s ‘associations’
  • Famous and infamous people buried in the graveyard
  • Remembering the ‘great and the good’
  • Unmarked and communal graves

The walk around the graveyard includes all the main areas as well as the most interesting parts. The stroll enables you to see very famous landmarks and monuments. We will also visit two mortsafes, the remnants of one part of the Flodden Wall and a sneak side view of a famous school. There will be plenty of photo opportunities.

We will stop at some of the headstones or memorials associated with the people mentioned in the introduction to this tour. There will be an opportunity to discover the imagery and symbolism on some of the more elaborate mausolea!

There is much to see in this graveyard. For those wishing to stroll at a very leisurely pace or to hear more about the graveyard, the tour can be extended to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
