Tailor made experience for children, teenagers and the ‘young at heart’

A ‘pick and mix’ walking tour catering for the ages and interests of the family group. There will be plenty of photo opportunities.

2 hours or 3 hours depending on how much or how little you wish to see and do, the stamina/attention span of those in the group and the locations of your choices.

Like a ‘sweetie’ shop, here is the selection from which to choose:

  • The story of Greyfriars Bobby, a famous faithful dog
  • The stories of the infamous characters of Burke and Hare and Deacon Brodie
  • The witches fountain.
  • Interactive experiences at the National Museum of Scotland including the Millennium Clock, racing cars, hot air balloons, coin pressing and energy saving tests. Dinosaurs, planes and many other attractions!
  • National Museum of Childhood – childrens’ toys, games, puzzles etc from the 1880’s onwards. Not interactive.
  • Paper sculptures in the main public library and the Scottish Poetry Library.
  • Visits to shops e.g.Harry Potter shop, fossil shop, museum shop, souvenir gift shops
  • ‘Blood and guts’ in the Grassmarket and Greyfriars Churchyard.
  • Food stops e.g. The Fudge House, Mimi’s Bakehouse, Scottish gourmet sausage rolls, Luca’s icecream, Mary’s Milk Bar (icecream), Considerit delicious vegan filled or topped doughnuts and mini doughballs for tiny tots (open 7 days during August, rest of year Wed - Sun)
  • The Meadows with a children’s swing park, green spaces to walk and play, tennis courts, croquet, Sunday mini funrun and murals. The Scottish gourmet sausage roll truck which also sells little tubs of Luca’s ice-cream is located here.
  • Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage
  • Camera Obscura
  • Museum of Magic, Fortune Telling and Witchcraft.  Not suitable for young children.
  • The Physicians’ Gallery, free museum about the science and humanity of medicine. Family friendly activities including discovering the secret of the Philosopher’s Stone with a 5.5.metre ancient alchemical scroll.

Optional extra

Depending on when your tour finishes and subject to availability of places, at the end there is the wonderful opportunity to join a workshop and make your own Harris Tweed handbag (called a satchell), washbag or backpack. A lasting memento of your creativity to show family and friends when you return home.

Start time:  From 9.00am at half hourly intervals till last start time of 2.00pm  Please note the libraries and a few museums are not open on Sundays.

3-hour tour: £165 for groups of up to 10 people

Additional cost: cost per person for Harris Tweed workshop. This will vary depending on what each person would like to make.

Subject to availability of places, at the end of your walking tour for the creative ‘young at heart’ there is a unique opportunity to join a workshop and make your own Harris Tweed handbag, a lasting memento of your visit to Edinburgh This is not suitable for young children.

I will book and pay for the workshop. and accompany you to the Islander shop where the workshop takes place but will not join you in the workshop. There is a workshop leader/instructor. The workshop lasts 1 hour to I hour 30 mins.
