An ‘Edinburgh new town’ Scottish textile walking tour.
Discover three unique shops which introduce you to ‘forever’ garments. You will love what you buy and want to keep for ever and indeed they will last for ever, such is the quality of the products.
As we stroll between shops, I shall tell you about the history of the new town with its beautiful neo-classical buildings.
We shall visit:
‘Good and innovative craftsmanship is the key to the success of every British textile business today’ (Princess Royal) and the three shops we visit are no exception.
Founded in 1797, Johnstons of Elgin produce luxurious woven and knitted products for men, women and children. World renowned, the company is family owned, has a Royal Warrant and has won numerous awards. Products include jumpers, cardigans and accessories in fashionable ‘designer’ and classic styles in cashmere, merino wool, lambswool and other fine yarns, dependent on the seasons.
‘British textiles have always been and will always be at the heart of what we do’ (Victoria Stapleton, Founder of Brora). The ethos of Brora is to create beautiful fashion which is stylish yet timeless. Colour inspiration often comes from the Scottish landscape and bold art in this family business. Victoria is not afraid of using or blending unusual colours and prints. As well as Scottish cashmere, British tailoring and Liberty prints, European linen and Indian embroidery is used in a broad range of products of men, women and children.
Stewart Christie & Co is the oldest tailor in Scotland. Founded in 1700, the company offer bespoke tailoring, made to measure, highland wear and ceremonial wear for men and women. There is a vast array of products for men and women including coats, jackets, skirts, knitwear, millinery, gilets and accessories including leather belts and sporrans. You will have the unique opportunity to watch a kiltmaker and tailor at work. The ladies and gents shops (next door to each other) are a joy to enter because of the interiors decorated with historic items and pictures associated with tailoring.
